Wandering
After a relaxing slow drive north, we were delighted to find one of our favorite campsites empty. We, of course, popped up the camper tops and settled into our cozy home for two nights. Our plans for the next day? To wander this wonderland of colorful sandstone to our heart’s content.
The red sand is delightful.
The California Evening Primrose loves sandy soil.
I wondered why Steve dropped his pack and starting climbing this outcrop.
And then I saw why.
The kids were having fun.
Working out passage through, over, and around was a fun challenge.
The colors and patterns in the sandstone were mesmerizing.
We continued exploring.
We came upon this high rock face, looked close, and found storied rock.
Around every corner was something magical to see.
The Lady spotted a petroglyph panel with her see mores. We made the climb.
We enjoyed lunch with a view.
And then climbed down from this high perch.
There was so much more to explore and discover. We were kids in a candy store.
There was a hanging alcove that had to be looked into.
We started back toward camp.
We were heartbroken to find the remains of a desert tortoise.
The afternoon was waning as we returned to the red sand.
And we came upon another petroglyph panel new to us. This was, indeed, a great day.
Our last evening at this camp was the perfect ending to another wondrous visit to Gold Butte.
We parted ways with our friends Deb & Steve the next morning, but we’d soon join forces again. This adventure was not over!
